A recognisable pattern in the sky formed by a group of stars. The stars forming an asterism are often physically unrelated and therefore just a pure line of sight arrangement. In addition they aren't necessarily all located in the same constellation.

Examples include the "Plough" of Ursa Major, the "W" of Cassiopeia and the "Coathanger" in Vulpecula.
